Every resort website shows you the glass floored, lagoon perched water villa first, because that's the photo that sells the destination. Then somewhere further down the page, almost as an afterthought, sits the beach villa.
Here's our honest opinion after staying there ourselves. The water villa is beautiful. It is also, for most people, not worth what you pay extra for it. What You're Actually Choosing Between
Most Maldives resorts offer three broad categories of room, and it helps to know all three exist before you fixate on just two.
Water villa, sometimes called an overwater bungalow, sits on stilts above the lagoon, usually connected to the rest of the island by a wooden walkway. Some come with a glass panel in the floor so you can watch fish below you, others have a private pool hanging over the water, and almost all have direct steps down into the lagoon from your own deck.
Beach villa or beach bungalow sits directly on the sand, usually just a short walk from the water itself, with the same general layout and amenities as the water villa but without the over water positioning.
Garden or bungalow rooms without a view sit further back from the beach, usually facing greenery rather than ocean, and tend to be the cheapest category on the island.
This piece is really about the first two, since the third rarely competes once you've already decided to spend Maldives money.
The Real Price Difference
This is where the decision actually gets made for most people, whether they admit it or not.
Across resorts, water villas typically cost somewhere between 30 and 50 percent more per night than the equivalent beach villa on the same property. On a budget resort that might mean a difference of fifty or so dollars a night. On a luxury resort it can easily mean several hundred dollars a night, which adds up fast over a five or seven night stay.
Translate that into INR and the gap becomes very real. A trip that costs around 1 lakh rupees per person in a beach villa at a value resort can become a multi lakh trip in a water villa at the very same property, before you've changed anything else about your holiday. What You Actually Get With a Water Villa
To be fair to the water villa, it's not just hype. There are real things you get that a beach villa doesn't offer. The view from your bed, genuinely, is just water in every direction, and waking up to that at least once is a special feeling. Many water villas also come with a glass floor panel or a private plunge pool, which beach villas usually don't have. You're still steps from the same lagoon, the same house reef, the same sunset. You still have direct beach access, just from sand instead of stilts. You're on the same private island, with the same restaurants, the same spa, the same butler service, the same pool, the same everything that actually fills your day. The only thing you're missing is the specific experience of your villa itself sitting over water rather than beside it.
And in our experience, once you're a day or two into the trip, you stop thinking about which villa type you're in at all, because you spend your day at the beach, the pool, the dive centre and the restaurants, not actually inside your room.
Does It Actually Matter Once You're There
Honestly, less than people expect before they book.
The whole island, water villa or beach villa, belongs to you while you're a guest there. You'll use the same facilities either way. The service level, the food, the activities, the overall feel of the trip stays identical regardless of which door you sleep behind. The water villa gives you a better view from your bed and a slightly more private soak in the lagoon. The beach villa gives you essentially the same holiday for a meaningfully lower price.
If we're being fully honest, the water villa is closer to a one time photo opportunity than a different category of holiday.
Who Should Actually Pick the Water Villa
There are good reasons to pick it, just be clear with yourself about which one applies to you.
It's genuinely worth it if this is a honeymoon, anniversary or milestone trip where the splurge itself is part of the celebration. It's worth it if you specifically want that glass floor or private plunge pool experience and have the budget to absorb the difference without it changing the rest of your trip. And it's worth it if you're someone who will actually use the privacy, meaning you plan to spend real time relaxing on your own deck rather than out exploring the island all day.
Who Should Pick the Beach Villa Instead
If your budget is doing any kind of stretching to make this trip happen, the beach villa is almost always the smarter call. It's also the better pick if you know you're someone who'll be out and about the island most of the day anyway, since the villa becomes more of a place to sleep than a destination in itself. And if this is your first Maldives trip and you're still deciding whether the destination suits your travel style at all, we'd genuinely suggest saving the water villa splurge for a return trip once you know you love the place.

We'd rank this purely on value for money, and on that measure the beach villa wins clearly. You get the same island, the same lagoon, the same service, the same memories, for noticeably less money.
That said, we understand the pull of the water villa, and if your budget comfortably allows it, there's nothing wrong with treating yourself to it, especially for a once in a lifetime occasion. Just go in knowing exactly what you're paying for. You're not paying for a better holiday.
You're paying for a better photo and a slightly different view from your bed.
