Planning a magical trip to Lapland, especially Rovaniemi, the official hometown of Santa Claus starts with one big question: When should you go?

The good news? Lapland is beautiful all year round, but the best time depends entirely on the experience you’re after.

Index for Quick Navigation:

Best Time to Visit Lapland

  • December: Best for meeting Santa, Christmas vibes, snowy magic

  • January - February: Best for postcard‑perfect landscapes & deep winter

  • Late February to Early March: Best for affordability, fewer crowds & still plenty of snow

  • Mid-March onwards: Snow starts melting & many winter tours begin to close

Rovaniemi/Lapland, Finland
Rovaniemi/Lapland, Finland

Late February to Early March: The Best Value for Money

This is honestly the sweet spotĀ if you want:

āœ… Snow everywhere

āœ… Fewer tourists

āœ…Cheaper accommodations

āœ… Longer daylight hours

āœ… Perfect weather for rides & tours

By mid‑March, snow starts melting, and Rovaniemi activities begin winding down, so aim for the first half of MarchĀ if possible. This period gives the best balance of cost, comfort, and winter fun.

What to Wear in Lapland: A Simple Packing Guide

The good news: You can wear almost anything, as long as you layer correctly. Lapland isn't about fashion, It’s about staying warm and safeĀ while enjoying those snowy adventures.

For March (Milder Cold):

  • Thermal inner layer

  • Warm jacket

  • Gloves

  • Thermal socks

  • Waterproof boots (non‑negotiable!)

Vendors for snow activities usually provide Arctic outerwear, helmets, and gloves.

For January & February (Arctic Cold):

When temperatures drop to –20°C to –30°C, you’ll need full Arctic layering:

  • Thermal base layer (top & bottom)

  • Fleece or wool mid‑layer

  • Outer down jacket or snow jacket

  • Waterproof snow pants

  • Insulated boots

  • Thermal socks (2 layers recommended)

  • Balaclava + warm hat

  • Gloves + glove liners

  • Neck warmer / buff

Things People Forget to Pack

  • Hand and foot warmers

  • Moisturiser + lip balm (Arctic air is extremely dry)

  • Power bank (cold drains battery fast)

  • Sunglasses (snow glare is real!)

  • Reusable water bottle (heated apartments make you thirsty)

Safety Tips

  • Paths are slippery, boots with proper grip are essential

  • Avoid wearing fashion sneakers; they freeze instantly

  • Always check weather warnings before road trips

Arriving in Rovaniemi & Transport Tips

The Rovaniemi Airport (RVN)Ā is small and easy to navigate. Once you land, you’ll find multiple car rental options right at the terminal.

GreenMotion Car Rental: Cheap but Popular

You’ll notice hundreds of travellersĀ queuing for GreenMotion, as it’s one of the cheapest options. But the downside? Long waiting lines. We saw a ling of around 100 customers during shoulder season. Can't imagine during peak.

Why We Chose SIXT Instead

We didn’t want to stand in long queues, so we chose SIXT:

  • Got a huge shoulder-season discount

  • Received a free upgradeĀ to a Mercedes GLS automatic

  • Heated seats + heated steering wheel = total Arctic luxury

  • Smooth drive on icy Lapland roads

Important Tip: Get a Good Car

Lapland roads can be slippery and snow-covered, so:

  • Choose a car with good winter tyres

  • Prefer AWD / 4x4

  • Ensure heating works well

A good car = a safer, more enjoyable trip.

Where to Stay in Rovaniemi: Accommodation Guide

Rovaniemi can be expensive, especially for food. That’s why we recommend Airbnb or apartment stays, especially for couples or families.

Why Airbnb Works Best

  • Restaurants can cost around €25–€30 for a simple burger & fries

  • A good studio apartment saves a LOT on meals

  • You get:

    āœ… Heating

    āœ… Kitchen or kitchenette

    āœ… Space to relax

    āœ… Better value for money

We stayed in a modern studio apartment, about 2 km from the city centre, with:

  • Centralised heating

  • Tabletop stove

  • Dishwasher

  • Comfortable for 2–4 nights

We stayed at this wonderful place: Arctic Deluxe, Rovaniemi (updated prices 2026)

Supermarkets in Rovaniemi

Easy options include:

  • Lidl

  • K‑Market

  • S‑Market

They sell all basics: bread, butter, ready‑to‑eat meals, drinks, snacks, soups, etc.

The money you save on restaurants can go directly toward activitiesĀ like husky rides, reindeer farms, and snowmobile safaris, which is a much better investment.

Things to Do in Rovaniemi

Before heading to activities read this as it's VERY Important: Most activities are around 45–60 minutes outside Rovaniemi city centre, and almost all companies include the transfer.

Here’s the realistic time breakdown:

  • 1 hour → Drive from city centre

  • 30–45 minutes → Safety briefing, gearing up

  • The activity itself → Depends on your package

  • 30 minutes → Post‑ride cuddles, photos, warm berry juice

  • 1 hour → Drive back to Rovaniemi

People underestimate this and end up rushing other plans.

Best Cafe in Rovaniemi

If you’re looking for the best cafĆ© in Rovaniemi for breakfast, CafĆ© & Bar 21 is a must-visit. It was easily one of the best food spots we tried in Finnish Lapland, with perfectly done scrambled eggs, fresh avocado toast, and a rich, comforting hot chocolate that’s ideal for the Arctic cold.

They also serve glogi, a traditional Finnish drink similar to mulled wine with a unique local twist perfect for warming up on a freezing day. We honestly didn’t expect it to be this good, but it turned out to be one of our favourite experiences in Rovaniemi. Highly recommend stopping by before heading out to explore.

The Ultimate Lapland Experience

Your trip to Lapland isn’t complete without exploring the magical, snowy playground of Rovaniemi, the official hometown of Santa Claus. Whether you're here for the festive charm, Arctic adventures, or bucket‑list moments, Rovaniemi truly feels like stepping inside a winter fairytale. Here’s how our journey unfolded, with honest impressions, travel humour, and practical tips to help you plan better.

Visit Santa Claus Village - The Heart of Lapland

One of the first things we did was head straight to the legendary Santa Claus Village, and honestly… how could we not?

Yes, it’s a cheerful, jolly, full‑belly‑of-laughter tourist trapĀ  and yes, it’s still absolutely worth it.

Meet the Real Santa (For Free!)

Meeting Santa is completely free, and he’s genuinely the best Santa I’ve ever seen. Warm, charming, fully in character, and surrounded by that magical Lapland atmosphere.

Of course, the photos and souvenirs are pricey. Did we still buy them? Absolutely. Why? Because it’s Santa. Come on.

Step Over the Arctic Circle Line

One of the most surreal moments of the trip was stepping and jumping over the iconic Arctic Circle line. There’s something unbelievably cool about standing exactlyĀ on the invisible border of the Arctic region.

It’s:

  • Surreal

  • Exciting

  • A proper ā€œI’m really in Lapland!ā€ moment

  • Great for photos and videos

  • A childhood-dream-come-true kind of experience

Trust me, you’ll find yourself hopping across the line like a happy penguin.

Send a Postcard from Santa’s Post Office

Santa’s Post Office is one of the cutest spots in the village.

You can:

  • Send postcards to loved ones

  • Schedule them to arrive for next Christmas

  • Buy adorable stamps and stickers

  • Browse through letters sent by children from around the world

Surprisingly, it’s quite affordable. But… we’re still waiting for ours to arrive after a month. Maybe it’s ā€œcoming by reindeer deliveryā€, or maybe it’s just Lapland magic working on Arctic time who knows.

Should You Do Husky & Reindeer Rides Here?

There are manyĀ activities available at Santa Claus Village, like:

  • Reindeer sleigh rides

  • Short husky rides

  • Snowmobile mini‑tracks

These are great for kids, families, and quick introductions to Lapland activities.

But if you want proper, immersive, real husky or reindeer safaris, keep reading, because the actual outdoor experiences are much better and longer (and often more scenic). We cover the full rides later in the blog.

Husky Rides in Rovaniemi: The Most Magical Experience in Lapland

If there is one activity in Lapland that feels straight out of a winter fairytale, it’s the husky safari. Rovaniemi has many incredible husky farms, each offering different packages starting from short rides to full‑length adventures across snowy forests. Here's our honest and fun breakdown of the experience.

Husky Safari, Lapland. Rides Huskies. Husky ride
Husky Safari, Lapland

Types of Husky Rides (Price & Distance)

There are several husky ride optionsĀ depending on your budget and how adventurous you’re feeling:

Short Ride (Around 1–2 km)

  • Starts from €90 per person

  • Perfect if you’re short on time

  • Great for kids and first‑timers

  • Gives you a quick taste of the thrill

Long Ride (Around 10 km)

  • Costs around €200 per person

  • The proper ā€œreal husky adventureā€

  • Takes you deep into snowy forests and frozen landscapes

  • More time with the huskies + more time controlling the sled

Yes, it’s pricey! We felt the pinch too, but honestly? Worth. Every. Euro.

What the Experience Is Really Like

The moment you arrive, you’re greeted by a symphony of excited barks — huskies loveĀ running. They are adorable, energetic, and ridiculously photogenic.

Before your ride, the guides will teach you:

  • How to brake

  • How to lean

  • How to support your partner if you're riding together

  • How not to fall off when the huskies are too excited (yes, they sprint at the start!)

Pro Tip:Ā Go as a pair

Husky rides are much more fun with two peopleĀ because:

  • One gets to sit in the sled

  • The other gets to driveĀ (yes, you actually drive the sled!)

  • You can switch halfway

  • It becomes a shared, laugh‑filled experience

There’s nothing like racing through the Arctic forest with the cold air hitting your face and your partner screaming, ā€œDON’T TIP US OVER!ā€ from the sled. It’s pure joy.

Is It Worth It? Absolutely.

The husky ride was one of the best experiencesĀ we had in Lapland:

  • Fast, fun, and full of adrenaline

  • Quiet forests + dog power = magical combination

  • Unique to Lapland as you simply can’t recreate it elsewhere

  • You bond with the huskies more than you expect

It’s expensive, yes, but it’s also one of those once‑in‑a‑lifetime activities that stays with you long after your trip. You'll find yourself talking about it for years.

Snowmobile Safari in Rovaniemi: Your Adrenaline-Packed Arctic Adventure

If you want a proper ā€œI’m in Lapland!ā€ moment, then a snowmobile safari in RovaniemiĀ is the way to go. Fast, fun, scenic, and slightly chaotic, in the best way.

Snowmobile Safari, Lapland. Rovaniemi. Snowmobile ride.
Snowmobile Safari, Lapland

Daytime vs Night time Snowmobiling

Daytime Ride

Perfect for enjoying endless white landscapes, frozen lakes, and snow‑covered forests that look straight out of a winter movie. Pure Arctic beauty at full brightness.

Night Ride (Aurora Hunt)

Want to feel like the main character in an Arctic adventure film?Go at night and ride under the stars and maybe catch the Northern LightsĀ while cruising on your snowmobile. Ridiculously cool.

Snowmobiles are usually shared between two people, and honestly, it’s way more fun this way:

  • One drives

  • One sits and panics

  • Then you switch

It turns into the perfect mix of laughter, teamwork, and ā€œomg please slow downā€ moments.

You Get Arctic Gear - Wear It

They’ll give you:

  • Arctic suit

  • Boots

  • Gloves

  • Balaclava

  • Helmet

No matter the month, wear everything. The wind chill is no joke when you’re zooming across a frozen lake.

Important Warning (Seriously!)

Snowmobiles are easy to drive, but don’t get overconfident. Trying to show off your biking skills is a fast way to receive a very expensive invoiceĀ for damages.

So: Ride. Enjoy. But don’t drift like you're in Fast & Furious: Arctic Edition. This isn't to scare you but a bill like this can ruin your trip. We had two such incidents happen to other people in the group who paid between €700-€1500 for the damages.

Price Range (Approx.)

  • Short tours: €100–€120 pp

  • Longer rides: €150–€200 pp

  • Night aurora rides: €160–€200 pp

Expensive? Yes.

Worth it? Also yes, nothing compares to racing through an Arctic forest on a snowmobile.

Reindeer Safari in Rovaniemi: The Calm, Cozy & Wholesome Lapland Experience

If snowmobiling is your adrenaline activity and huskies are your fun chaos activity, then the reindeer safariĀ in Rovaniemi is your peaceful, storybook‑slow, ā€œah yes, this is Laplandā€ moment.

The Classic Reindeer Sleigh Ride Experience

A reindeer ride takes you through snowy forests at a slow, dreamy pace. Think:

āœ… Snow falling softly

āœ… Silence everywhere

āœ… A reindeer gently trotting through winter landscapes

āœ… You wrapped up inside a sleigh like a cosy cinnamon bun

It literally feels like you’ve stepped into a Christmas postcard.

Just like husky and snowmobile rides, going as a pair is way more fun:

  • One sits back and relaxes

  • The other pretends to be a professional photographer

  • You both become the main characters in a Nordic fairy tale

Trust me, the photos you get here? Chef’s kiss.

Price Range

Reindeer safaris vary widely depending on duration and style:

  • Short sleigh ride: €60–€90 per person

  • Longer 1–2 hour rides: €100–€150 per person

  • Evening aurora reindeer rides: €140–€180 per person

Not cheap, but you’re paying for the experience of literally travelling like the SĆ”mi people have for centuries.

Fun Fact: Reindeer Are Adorable but… Moody

Reindeer are gentle, sweet creatures, but don’t expect them to behave like huskies.

Huskies: ā€œLET’S GO FULL SPEED!!!

Reindeer: ā€œI will trot at my own vibe. Please respect my vibe.ā€

Their calm pace is actually what makes the ride so special.

Northern Lights Tour in Rovaniemi

What You NEED to Know Before You Go Aurora Hunting

The Northern LightsĀ are the crown jewel of any Lapland trip. Everyone lands in Rovaniemi dreaming of those glowing green curtains dancing in the sky and while it canĀ happen, there are a few things you REALLY need to know before booking your aurora tour.

This activity can be done in multiple waysĀ depending on your vibe:

āœ… Snowmobile aurora safari

āœ… Reindeer aurora sleigh ride

āœ… Husky aurora ride

āœ… Walking into forests (DIY style)

āœ… Bus tours (most common + best chance of success)

But don’t be fooled by ā€œ100% guaranteeā€ aurora tours and there’s a story behind that.

Let’s break it down.

Aurora lights/Northern lights tour, Lapland
Aurora lights/Northern lights tour, Lapland

How Aurora Tours Actually Work (The Honest Truth)

Many tour companies advertise ā€œ100% Aurora Guarantee!ā€

Sounds amazing, right? But here’s the realĀ meaning behind it…

They guarantee the hunt, not the spectacle.

Not the dramatic light show you see on Instagram.

Their job is to:

  • Chase clear skies

  • Drive around a 200 km radius

  • Use aurora forecast apps (the same ones we use)

  • Take photos of anyĀ visible aurora, even faint ones

  • Capture somethingĀ on camera

Even if the aurora is only visible to their camera and not your eyes, the guarantee is considered fulfilled. Yep. Welcome to Aurora Reality 101.

Conditions You MUST Have for Northern Lights Visibility

If this is your first time aurora hunting, these are the BIG factors that decide whether you’ll see anything:

1. Solar Activity (KP Index)

This is the strength of the aurora.Higher KP = stronger activity = better chance of seeing it.

  • KP 1–2 → Very weak (mostly only camera picks it up)

  • KP 3–4 → Good chance to see with eyes

  • KP 5+ → Storm level, huge displays possible

Tour companies monitor this constantly.

2. Clear Sky

Clouds are the enemy. Auroras dance above the clouds, so if the sky is covered, you won’t see anything even with high solar activity. This is why bus tours drive farĀ from Rovaniemi if needed.

3. Low Light Pollution

Even moonlight can wash out weak auroras.

You need:

  • No city lights

  • No streetlights

  • No car lights

  • No glowing hotel windows

  • Ideally, no bright full moon either

This is why tours pick remote spots or frozen lakes far from civilization.

Why Aurora Often Shows Up Only on Camera

Here’s a fun fact many people don’t know:

The aurora you see with your eyes is usually much weakerĀ than what you see on camera.

Cameras can:

  • Capture higher exposure

  • Enhance green colours

  • Pick up faint activity

  • Create a ā€œvisible auroraā€ even when you see nothing

So even if you personally see only grey clouds in the sky, the camera might show a bright green streak. And yes, that counts as a ā€œsuccessful aurora sightingā€ for the tour company.

Just setting expectations correctly.

How Aurora Bus Tours Operate

Bus tours are the most common option because they offer:

āœ… Long-distance drives (up to 200 km radius)āœ…

Knowledge of dark, remote spots

āœ… Professional photographers

āœ… Warm snacks + hot drinks

āœ… Campfire stops

āœ… Photos included

And yes, sometimes they’ll keep you out until 2–5 AM just to avoid issuing refunds. Dedicated, you see. But don’t worry, this is normal in Lapland. Aurora hunting can be an all-night commitment.

Our Personal Experience (Lucky Us!)

We were incredibly lucky on our tour.

Our guide didn’t even need to drive 30 km.We spotted aurora bursts almost immediately because:

āœ… The sky was crystal clear

āœ…The KP activity was decent

āœ… We were far from lights

āœ… The timing was perfect

He stopped at the nearest dark area instead of the original remote spot which was a bit of a bummer, but he didn’t want us to miss the bursts. And honestly? We didn’t complain. The lights put on a beautiful show for us. Pure magic.

Aurora lights. Northern lights tour.

Best Time to See Northern Lights in Rovaniemi

The most favourable months are:

āœ… Late Februaryāœ… March

Why?

  • Clearer skies

  • Less cloud cover

  • Longer nights (but not freezing like January)

  • Solar activity still strong

  • Perfect balance between weather + visibility

You can see auroras anytime from September to April, but Feb-March gives the BEST odds.

Final Takeaway: Don’t Stress - Enjoy the Hunt

Even if you don’t see the lights dancing like crazy overhead, the experience itself is worth it:

  • Driving into remote Arctic wilderness

  • Standing under a pitch‑black sky

  • Feeling the peaceful silence

  • Warming up with hot drinks

  • Watching others cheer for faint green streaks

Aurora hunting is unpredictable but that’s what makes it memorable.

Must‑Do Day Trips Around Rovaniemi

If you’ve already done huskies, reindeers, snowmobiles, and northern lights, there are still some absolutely amazing day tripsĀ around Rovaniemi worth exploring. These spots give you a break from the tourist crowds and let you experience the quieter, wilder side of Lapland.

The best part?

All threeĀ lie along the same main road, so with a car and good planning, you can technically cover them all in one day.

Ranua Wildlife Park - See Polar Bears & Arctic Foxes

Ranua Zoo (officially Ranua Wildlife Park) is the northernmost zoo in the world, and honestly, it’s a lovely half‑day trip, especially for animal lovers.

What you’ll see:

āœ… Polar bears

āœ… Arctic foxes

āœ… Lynxes

āœ… Wolverines

āœ… Snowy owls

āœ… Moose, reindeer & other Nordic wildlife

It’s a peaceful walk through a forested trail with well‑maintained enclosures, and the animals here are all Arctic species adapted to the weather, so they look right at home.

If you’ve never seen a polar bear chilling in actual snow, this is your place.

Korouoma Canyon - Frozen Waterfalls You’ll Never Forget

This is one of the most stunning natural sights in FinlandĀ - a deep canyon lined with giant frozen waterfalls. It looks like something out of an ice‑climbing documentary.

But here’s the important part:

āš ļø You NEED the right gear.

Korouoma involves:

  • A steep descent

  • Snow trails

  • Ice patches

  • A tiring ascent back up

So depending on the season, you will need:

āœ… SnowshoesĀ (deep snow)

āœ… Crampons / microspikesĀ (icy sections)

If you don’t have at least crampons, you might reach the bottom but never make it back up safelyĀ once the snow gets soft under the sun. This trail is gorgeous, surreal, and absolutely worth it, just be prepared.

You can do it:

  • Self‑guidedĀ (if you know winter hiking)

  • With a tour groupĀ (if you want it safer but more expensive)

Trails are well‑marked, so navigation isn’t the issue, traction is.

Frozen Waterfalls, Korouoma National Park. Lapland.
Frozen Waterfalls, Korouoma National Park

How we did it:

We drove up ourselves, feeling all brave… until the hike began. Easily the scariest trek of our lives with no crampons, no microspikes, just pure optimism and questionable decision‑making. By the time we started descending, the sun was melting the snow like it had a personal vendetta. There were wayĀ too many close calls, but somehow, by pure miracle (and probably sheer panic), we made it back up without a single scratch.

Ounasvaara Winter Trails - Quiet, Peaceful & Pure Lapland

Ounasvaara is one of the easiest winter nature escapes right next to Rovaniemi town.Think:

āœ… Wooden boardwalks

āœ… Snow‑covered forests

āœ… Small ice structures

āœ… Scenic viewpoints

If you go in February, the snow is at its absolute best, thick, fluffy, and beautifully draped over every branch and rock. Again:Wear snowshoes. They make the walk 10Ɨ more enjoyable and prevent the ā€œfalling through knee‑deep snow every 4 minutesā€ experience.

It’s peaceful, quiet, and perfect if you just want a relaxing winter stroll.

Final Thoughts: Why Lapland & Rovaniemi Are Worth Every Moment

A trip to LaplandĀ is not just a holiday but an experience that stays with you long after you thaw out your fingers. Whether you come for huskies, reindeers, snowmobiles, Santa Claus Village, frozen waterfalls, or the elusive Northern Lights, Rovaniemi gives you a magical blend of adventure, nature, and pure winter wonder.

From racing across Arctic forests on a snowmobile to quietly drifting through snow with a gentle reindeer…From cuddling excited huskies to standing under the glowing Arctic sky waiting for the aurora’s grand entrance…Every moment here feels like stepping into your own fairytale.

Lapland teaches you to slow down, breathe the cold crisp air, and enjoy the simplicity of winter magic. Even if the aurora doesn’t dance for you (it’s moody, not your fault), the journey, the hunt and the silence of the Arctic night is still unforgettable.

And the best part? Lapland is for everyone: couples, families, solo travellers, photographers, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to feel like a kid again.

If you plan your days well, dress for the weather, and embrace the adventure with an open mind, Lapland will reward you with memories you’ll talk about for years.

So pack your layers, charge your camera, lace up your boots, and get ready - Lapland is waiting to surprise you. Happy Travels!

Happy Travels! Hope you find Lapland/Rovaniemi as amazing as we did. Can't wait to go back.
