Overview of the Trip

If you’re planning a Turkey trip and don’t know where to start, then this 10-day itinerary covers the perfect mix of history, landscapes, and unforgettable experiences.

We travelled from Dublin and met our friends from Bangalore at Istanbul, making this trip even more special. Over 10 days, we explored some of Turkey’s most iconic destinations, from the buzzing streets of Istanbul to the surreal beauty of Cappadocia.

Route:Ā Istanbul → Ephesus → Pamukkale → Antalya → Cappadocia → Istanbul

Duration:Ā 10 DaysšŸ‘‰

Style:Ā Fast-paced but well worth it

Visa & Planning Tips

Depending on the country you apply from or passport you hold, Turkey offers a simple e-Visa process, and we received ours within 30 minutes. However, for our friends in Bangalore, it was through a full VFS process that costed almost €200PP. So consider this in your budget while planning to travel to Turkiye! https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/

Pro Tip:Ā Flights to Turkey can get expensive, hence book early to get the best deals.

Day 1–2: Istanbul - Where History Meets Energy

Istanbul is one of those cities you feel instantly. Once known as Constantinople, the city carries centuries of history, yet it’s incredibly modern and alive. Istanbul never sleeps.

What to do in Istanbul

Hagia Sophia

Originally built in 537 AD, Hagia Sophia has served as a cathedral, mosque, and museum. Today, it stands as one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. It was also known as the 'Red Apple' and one of the most prominent structures during the reign of constantinople (Now Istanbul).

Food You Cannot Miss

Hafiz Mustafa 1864

Where We Stayed

We stayed at a hotel with a direct view of the Blue Mosque, and it was absolutely magical, especially in the evenings. Golden Age Hotel, Taksim. (View of the Blue Mosque)

Day 3: Ephesus – Walking Through Ancient Ruins

We took an early morning flight to Izmir and headed straight to Ephesus.

Strongly recommend to hire a guide. Without one, you'll miss the history behind the ruins. Arrive early, cruise crowds fill the site quickly (This is key).

What to See in Ephesus

  • Library of Celsus

  • Great Theatre

  • Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World)

  • Terrace Houses

House of Virgin Mary

We also visited the House of the Virgin Mary, believed to be the final residence of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Located just a short drive from Ephesus on Mount Koressos, this peaceful and spiritual site holds deep significance for both Christians and Muslims. The atmosphere here is calm and reflective, surrounded by nature, and one of the most unique traditions is the wishing wall, where visitors tie small pieces of paper or cloth with their prayers and wishes something we also took part in. It’s a quiet yet powerful experience and definitely worth adding to your Ephesus visit.

We ended the day at a beautiful hotel overlooking the harbour, with cruise ships docked nearby with a peaceful and scenic end to a long day. Of course, we had our own little shenanigan in the room later that evening. We stayed at Suhan Seaport at Kusadasi.

Day 4: Pamukkale to Antalya

An early start again as we made our way to Pamukkale.

Pamukkale Experience

Pamukkale is famous for its white travertine terraces, formed by mineral-rich thermal waters. (It's been featured in various famous from around the world). It almost looks like a snow-covered hillside, but it’s all natural limestone.

Tips:

  • Go early (it gets VERY crowded)

  • Walk carefully as surfaces are slippery

  • You’ll need to remove your shoes

Beach Experience

Antalya’s beaches are:

  • Clean

  • Well-maintained

  • Lively

There are plenty of beach shacks which are slightly pricey, but worth it for the experience.

Food & Night Experience

We tried local dishes and drinks at a fantastic restaurant before heading to one of the most unique experiences of the trip:

A late-night Kunefe spot (open only at night). We even got to see how it was made, and the taste was absolutely incredible. This is a local favorite and hence not that well known to tourists. But it's a must try if you're at Antalya.

Day 6: Travel to Cappadocia

This day was mostly about travel, as we drove from Antalya to Cappadocia.

It was a long journey, but honestly one of the most enjoyable with just friends catching up and enjoying the ride.

Our first stop however, was for a traditional Turkish breakfast with a view at Antalya.

Traditional Turkish Breakfast,

We stopped at a large mosque in KonyaĀ (likely the Mevlana Mosque), which was beautiful and worth the visit. We arrived in Cappadocia late at night and stayed in a cave hotel, which is an experience in itself. However, If i had to recommend, while i enjoyed the drive myself, It's faster and easier if you take a flight from Ephesus to Cappadocia.

Day 7–8: Cappadocia – The Highlight of the Trip

This is where Turkey truly becomes unforgettable. Waking up early to watch (or ride) the balloons is magical. Hundreds of balloons filling the sky, it’s surreal.
